Simmons SOM Featured in Article about Grad Schools' Efforts to Recruit Women MBAs
A WISTV (Columbia, S.C.) website article about graduate schools' efforts to recruit women in MBA programs included quotes from SOM Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands and student C.A. Webb.
In the article, Dean Merrill-Sands reported that only about 27 percent of the professors and 15 percent of the top hierarchy in business schools today are female, and she believes this mirrors what is seen in the business world. The article goes on to highlight Simmons SOM as one school that is adapting to women MBAs needs by revising curricula to include more case studies about women, offering more courses in entrepreneurship, because there are high numbers of women entrepreneurs, and emphasizing topics such as corporate social responsibility, governance, gender dynamics in business, and ethical decision making. “These issues align with women’s values and leadership aspirations. Schools that emphasize those topics will be more attractive to women who are looking at MBAs than those schools that don’t,” Merrill-Sands was quoted as saying.
C.A. Webb talked about the benefits of attending an all-women's MBA program: "I understand how powerful it is to look up and see the president and the deans that are women. You internalize that when you see women every day running things, leading, and making things happen. You assume that you are capable of that too and you live that out."
